Promoting and Incorporating Self-Care Activities Into Your Children's Regular Routine

According to a study from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, between 2016 and 2020, the portion of the population between 3 and 17 suffering from anxiety and depression rose by 29% and 27% respectively. This does not include undiagnosed cases. Children's mental health, already a growing problem before recent events, has become a serious national emergency. Adults often dismiss children's problems as insignificant and "not real," but they are just as important as any older individuals must face.

Part of combating the natural stress placed on your kids is teaching and modeling self-care so they can develop healthy habits. Gradually incorporating certain activities into their daily routines can help accomplish this while also helping them reset, refresh and mentally prepare for the day or week.

Mindfulness Meditation

Research shows that both mindfulness and meditation are beneficial for overall mental health. Mindfulness is being aware of yourself, your surroundings and the present. Perform meditation with your children at a set time each day, either in the morning to relax and sharpen the brain for the day, or in the evening to unwind for the night. It can be done sitting or standing, whichever is most comfortable. There are many free videos online that instruct you on how to do it. Alternatively, there are also classes you and your children can attend. It is important to meditate alongside your children.

Prioritizing spending time with them, especially during busy times of the year when they may see you less often, is important for your relationship and their happiness. Having a plan and a scheduled time to meditate with your children ensures quality time while relieving the pressure of adjusting your schedule constantly. By practicing mindfulness meditation yourself, you also encourage your children to take it seriously.

Out-of-Home Programs

Find activities and programs where your kids can meet and socialize with new people. Don't force them to stay in one that they don't enjoy; instead, prioritize finding one that fills them with joy and excitement, revitalizing them completely. Try getting annual passes to interesting places like museums or aquariums and planning family outings to get in more quality time with them.

Outdoor Play

In the age of technology, children have deserted much of outdoor play for the wonders of gaming and iPads. While these have their own benefits, spending some time outside helps them get exercise, keeping their bodies healthy, while also aiding their cognitive development. Take your children to the local park or swimming pool. Encourage them to take daily walks or bike around the neighborhood.

If your neighborhood does not have safe or conducive areas for play, convert your yard into a play area. Get your land graded by local contractors for erosion control and drainage improvement. Conduct a search for “land grading near me” and make sure to check reviews to locate trustworthy contractors, as well as identify deals or companies that offer credits, before meeting with one to get a quote.

Purchase playground equipment like a swing or slide, or exercise equipment like a pull-up bar if you feel your kids would be interested. Be sure to peruse product reviews and look closely at ratings so you can get the most durable and quality toys or exercise equipment for your money.

Self-care is vital for everyone, regardless of age. By incorporating self-care activities into your children's schedules early on and doing them with them, you can prioritize your kids and help them handle and learn how to deal with their stress in a productive manner.
