Wrestling to Beat the Streets DC Awarded Grant

Washington, DC, June 10, 2020 – Wrestling to Beat the Streets DC (WBTS-DC) will be able to further spread its message thanks to a grant from Events DC.

Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the nation’s capital, awarded WBTS-DC a $5000 grant through its Community Grant program. The money will allow WBTS-DC to continue its mission of building character, discipline and self-esteem to DC youth through the sport of wrestling.

“We are grateful to Events DC for the grant,” WBTS-DC Executive Director Geary Fitzpatrick said. “Not only will it allow us to reach more kids in the coming school year, but it will help us continue to restore the wrestling culture of DC.”

Since launching in 2013, WBTS-DC has introduced more than 500 DC youth to the sport of wrestling with in-person clinics, camps and competitions at DC Public and Charter schools. In this time, WBTS-DC launched four high school programs and two middle school programs from the ground up by providing wrestling mats, shoes, equipment and coaches. WBTS-DC also provides ongoing support to seven additional DC middle school programs.

“Establishing these programs takes a real investment,” Fitzpatrick said. “Between mats, shoes, headgear, transportation and more, getting a program off the ground takes upward of $25,000. That’s why we are so thankful to Events DC for providing us this grant to help us reach even more kids in DC.”

Wrestling to Beat the Streets DC is 100% funded by donors and community grants.
